Process of Creative Works

  • This page showcases the process behind Eunbin Nam's design projects, ranging from public installations and media art to video and exhibitions. While working as an art director and creative director in a design studio of 4-5 members, Eunbin Nam led and collaborated on various projects. Any work not marked as a collaboration is classified as an individual task.

Layout

  • Site Analysis

    Analyzing natural and artificial environmental factors.

  • Concept sketch

    Sketching multiple concepts for the site.

  • Architectural Model

    Reviewing scale and layout using an architectural model.

  • Floor Plan

    * Collaborated with architect

    Setting the layout through floor planning.

Concept Design

  • Research

    Discovering historical and cultural clues and identifying key contexts.

  • Concept Development

    Visualizing multiple concepts through writing and illustrations based on insights derived from research.

  • Synopsis

    Developing these concepts into concise synopses that capture the theme.

  • Scenario

    Further refining the scenario into a more detailed narrative, considering the specific location or exhibition space.

Architectural Design

  • Prototype Design

    Developing various prototypes based on the theme and concept through 3D modeling programs.

  • Architectural Sculpture Design

    Refining the design based on the scenario and reviewing landscape.

  • Architectural & Structural Engineering Review

    * Engineering reviewed by external expert

    For outdoor installations, conducting an engineering review to ensure structural feasibility.

  • Material & Color Design

    Developing materials and colors while considering the lighting and architectural light design specific to the site.

Simulation & Presentation

  • Layout Review

    Based on the design reviewed by the engineering team, creating a 1/50 or 1/10 scale study model to re-evaluate the sightlines and balance from the audience's perspective.

  • Presentation Document

    * Collaborated with a 3D company

    Preparing all presentation materials and documents for stakeholders and clients, including aerial views and perspective drawings.

  • Scenography

    * Collaborated with a 3D company

    For time-based media art, producing a video that captures the overall flow and structure of the project.

  • Simulation

    * Collaborated with a 3D company

    crafting video simulations for sharing detailed direction and execution.

System Layout & Architectural Document

  • System Configuration

    * Collaborated with  technical experts

    Designing detailed system layouts to implement the finalized design on-site.

  • System Performance & Technical Review

    Reviewing the performance of equipment to ensure that the system can accurately reflect the planned design.

  • Scene & Space Review

    Final Reviewing the landscape design and sculpture design for the completed site.

  • Architectural Document

    * Collaborated with architects and mechanical engineers

    Creating detailed construction drawings and revising the budget accordingly.

Creative Contents & Story

  • Synopsis Development

    developing detailed storyboards based on the initial synopsis. This includes a detailed description of the video production.

  • Character Design

    If the project requires a specific narrator or character, a character design that reflects the storytelling is created.

  • Storyboard

    Once the synopsis and character design are completed, the design for each scene is finalized through the storyboard.

  • Space & Content Scenarios

    Finally, ideation is carried out to connect how the developed story and storyboard can be effectively executed in the space.

Media Design

  • Sound Design

    * Collaborated with a composer

    Music is designed based on an analysis of the emotional, visual, and spatial experiences that each scene needs to convey.

  • Media Layout (Time-Based Media)

    The media layout design is refined by reviewing how each medium creates harmony within the space.

  • Choreography (Time-Based Media)

    * Collaborated with a assistant designer

    For projects requiring elements like water and light, the choreography of these media is planned.

  • Lighting Design (Color)

    Studing the light and colors of the scenes and sharing the visual design with the engineering team.

Visual Design

  • Visual Research & Production Plan

    Based on the sound and the completed synopsis, detailed visual research and guidelines for production are developed.

  • Scene Drawing

    creating notes and drawing on how the video interacts with other media.

  • Video Storyboard

    The final video storyboard includes necessary information for video production and details on time-based animations based on the music.

  • Art Production

    If experimental works are required, I do craft separate artwork for video animation

Video Production

  • 3D Design

    * Collaborated with a 3D programmer

    Based on the storyboard, models are created, and if necessary, a pre-show test is conducted at the actual scale.

  • Animation

    * Collaborated with a 3D programmer

    Animations are adjusted based on the installation method and location; for indoor media art, depth and three-dimensionality are emphasized, while for outdoor projections, colors are used more richly to enhance visibility.

  • Production Management

    Planning for art direction, team composition, budget adjustments, and project management are carried out concurrently with the creative work.

Multimedia Design & Programming

  • Laser Design

    * Collaborated with a assistant designer

    Designing a visual elements in the show, alongside with projection videos. Using lasers to create linear patterns and emphasize parts of the story through animation.

  • Laser Programming

    * Collaborated with laser programmer

    Implementing the design through programming, ensuring visual issues like reflections on sculptures are addressed.

  • Lighting Design(Show Lighting)

    * Collaborated with programmer and lighting director

    (This is for show production) Analyzing the sound and scenes, and designing light to enhance the aesthetics of each scene.

  • Lighting Design(Architectural Lighting)

    * Collaborated with programmer and lighting director

    Considering seasonal characteristics and environmental lighting, the architreure light design for night time is conducted.
